Learning Outcome #1: Generating Inquiry
Outcome description
Students will be able to generate and explore genuine lines of inquiry related to writing, language, literacy, and/or rhetoric.

This artifact represents the very beginning of my journey into researching noninvasive health monitoring. It was like stumbling upon a trend that I hadn’t fully thought through yet—but once I started digging, I realized it had layers worth exploring. During an in-class brainstorming session, I started by listing general interests: fitness, tech innovations, the healthcare system, and the way people track their health now versus the past. As I kept writing, I kept circling back to wearable health tech like Fitbits or smartwatches. The way they offer real-time data, their popularity, and even the controversy surrounding them felt like they connected directly to bigger conversations we’d been having in class about language, persuasion, and audience. What started as a curiosity quickly became the foundation of my research. Similar to a first clue at a crime scene, this activity helped me uncover the subject I’d eventually explore in depth: how noninvasive wearable technologies are shaping the way we understand and manage health.
This artifact represents the next step in refining my research direction. Once I realized I wanted to write about wearable health devices, I had to figure out what kinds of questions I was really trying to answer—and which rhetorical concepts could help me dig deeper. I started thinking about how these devices are marketed and perceived, how they affect people’s behavior, and what conversations are happening around privacy and healthcare access. I decided that terms like identification, ecology, and motivation helped me frame the ways users connect to this tech, how it fits into broader health systems, and why people choose to adopt or reject it. These early thoughts helped shape my final research question, even though some of my ideas evolved later on. Like dusting for prints at a scene, this stage helped me zoom in on the exact questions that would carry through into my final paper.
